HOW GOV. UMO ENO’S 11KM OWOT UTA-AFAHA UDO EYOP-EDEBOM ROAD IS BOOSTING COMMERCE, CONNECTING COMMUNITIES, AND DRIVING RURAL PROSPERITY
By Emmanuel Ndon
Owot Uta , Nnung Oku Ekwere, Afaha Udo Eyop and Edebom 1, in Akwa Ibom State once struggled under the burden of poor road connectivity. In these neighborhoods and adjoining communities farmers found it difficult to transport produce to markets, students endured long and difficult journeys to school, and access to healthcare was often delayed by impassable roads.
Today, that reality has changed. Through the construction of the 11-kilometre Owot-Uta–Nnung Oku Ekwere–Afaha Udo Eyop–Edebom Road, Governor Umo Eno has delivered a critical infrastructure project that is transforming lives, connecting communities, and unlocking economic opportunities across the area.
Spanning several communities, the road forms an important link between rural settlements and commercial centres. The road was built to durable engineering standards, complete with proper drainage channels and culverts designed to withstand seasonal rainfall and ensure year-round accessibility. Rather than providing a temporary solution, Governor Umo Eno’s administration invested in infrastructure that will serve generations and support long-term development.
For farmers, the impact has been immediate and significant. Before the road was constructed, transporting agricultural produce to markets was costly, difficult, and often resulted in substantial losses due to spoilage. Today, vehicles can access farms directly, allowing farmers to move larger quantities of produce quickly and efficiently. With improved access to markets, farmers earn better returns, expand production, and improve the welfare of their families. What was once subsistence farming is increasingly becoming a viable and profitable enterprise.
The road has also transformed access to education. Students in Afaha Udo Eyop, Edebom, and neighbouring communities no longer contend with muddy footpaths and hazardous journeys to school. Improved transportation has reduced absenteeism, increased punctuality, and created a safer environment for learning. Schools can now receive textbooks, furniture, and educational supplies more easily, further enhancing the quality of education available to our grassroots communities.
Healthcare delivery has similarly improved. Residents requiring urgent medical attention can now reach health facilities much faster than before. Pregnant women, children, and the elderly benefit from safer and quicker access to hospitals and clinics. Ambulances and medical personnel can travel more easily along the route, ensuring that healthcare services reach communities when they are most needed. In practical terms, this road is helping to save lives.
Economic activity throughout the corridor has expanded considerably. Local markets are experiencing increased patronage as traders and buyers move more freely between communities. Transport operators, food vendors, artisans, and small business owners are benefiting from the increased movement of people and goods. New commercial opportunities continue to emerge, creating jobs and boosting household incomes. The road has become more than a transportation asset; it is now an engine of local economic growth.
The successful delivery of the project also highlights Governor Umo Eno’s strategic approach to development.
Beyond its economic benefits, the road has strengthened social cohesion among the connected communities. Families can visit one another more easily, attendance at social and religious events has increased, and residents enjoy greater interaction and integration. Communities that were once isolated now feel more connected to the wider development taking place across Akwa Ibom State.
From a broader perspective, the Owot-Uta Road reflects Governor Eno’s commitment to inclusive development. Rather than concentrating infrastructure investments solely in urban centres, his administration is extending development to rural communities that have historically been underserved. This commitment ensures that every part of the state shares in the dividends of progress and prosperity.
Residents across the benefiting communities continue to express appreciation for the project. Farmers report increased earnings, traders enjoy better access to customers, students attend school more regularly, and families experience greater convenience in their daily lives. These tangible improvements reinforce public confidence in Governor Eno’s development agenda and demonstrate the practical value of investing in rural infrastructure.
The success of the 11-kilometre Owot-Uta–Nnung Oku Ekwere–Afaha Udo Eyop–Edebom Road validates Governor Eno’s strategy of using infrastructure as a catalyst for economic and social transformation. It is evidence that thoughtful planningn and quality execution can deliver meaningful results for ordinary citizens.
As vehicles now travel smoothly along this once-neglected corridor, the benefits of the project continue to multiply. Farmers move their produce with ease, students travel safely to school, patients access healthcare more quickly, and businesses expand their reach. The road has ended years of isolation and opened new pathways to opportunity.
This is development that can be seen, measured, and experienced. It is another example of Governor Umo Eno’s commitment to building an Akwa Ibom where every community is connected, every citizen has access to opportunity and no part of the state is left behind
